Summary
Substance use disorders (SUD) affect one in five Canadians during their lifetime and are a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality. Common substances include alcohol, cannabis, opioids, prescription drugs, and cocaine. Despite advancements in treatment options over the last five decades, many individuals with SUD still do not receive the necessary care, resulting in poor patient outcomes, negative experiences, and high healthcare costs. Effective healthcare is crucial for improving outcomes for those with SUD, yet they often lack access to high-quality mental and physical health services. To enhance the healthcare system, it is essential to identify areas where care quality is deficient.
In this project, we aim to create methods for assessing the quality of healthcare provided for substance use disorders (SUD) by leveraging large-scale, population-based healthcare data. Initially, we will perform a comprehensive scoping review to identify all existing quality indicators for SUD care. Subsequently, we will establish methodologies to measure these indicators using the available healthcare data.
